We started off class today by going over our weekend homework. After a discussion, we started taking notes on rock types and subtypes. Tonight's HW: IT pages 65-70. Remember that the project is due Thursday and we have a test Friday!
Several of you came to curriculum night. In case you missed out tonight or missed something from the presentation, here it is!
Last but not least, our field trip was unveiled tonight!
Today was a general "welcome to science" - students received a syllabus and that is to be signed a returned tomorrow.
Students are also to complete "Getting to Know You" for tomorrow, as well as number ALL pages in one composition book, front and back, starting with the very first page.
Tomorrow we will take our pretest for the year, and on Monday we will dive in head first to geology!
PLEASE sign up for Remind101 to receive homework texts and announcements. Directions can be found under the online resources tab - select Remind101.
Today's notes from class are posted below. Flaps are assigned and will be checked on Monday.
The entire 6th grade is going to the aquarium in January! This is going to be a great experience and we're going to get to do things beyond a normal visit to the Georgia Aquarium. Each team has a designated day, as the aquarium can't accommodate all of us at once. This trip is completely separate from our Rock Eagle trip in May. Rock Eagle is something special that we get to do as a team, but the aquarium is for all 6th grade students.
Please write checks separately for the Rock Eagle trip and the Aquarium trip. Our first due date for Rock Eagle money is coming up in two weeks. Parents, even if you can't make a full payment ($25 or more) please consider at least sending in $5 or $10 to let me know your intention for your child to attend. I will also take permission slips without money. Nov 12 is the due date, but I am happy to take money sooner. It's never too soon to make a payment or send a permission slip. Any payment will be applied to your account as soon as it is received. If you have questions, please contact me. I'm happy to work out other payment plans if none of my options work for you, but I do need to have at least 1/3 of the cost of the trip before we leave for winter break in December. Also, if you are in a position where you can provide a partial scholarship for another student, donations are welcome. We are currently working out details for a fundraiser to help offset the cost as much as possible. Details on that later.
Both trips are going to be truly unforgettable experiences and are worth the expense. The total cost for the year's field trips is $120 - just $10/month. I suggested students save slushie money or ice cream money to help pay for the trips - maybe even refrain from purchasing songs on iTunes and put that money toward a trip. Authentic learning can be hard to come by, so it's amazing that our students have two chances to get out in the world and experience SCIENCE! Other content areas will also be incorporated into the trips.
Thanks for your support and enthusiasm!
Below, find a copy of the permission slip. Students will receive a GREEN permission slip in science class tomorrow.
Plate Puzzle (make sure it is colored! - continents one color, water another)

Watch the news tonight for more Hurricane Sandy coverage. We'll talk about it tomorrow.
The pictures we looked at today are from www.weather.com - the page is being updated continually, but here's the most recent link: http://www.weather.com/news/weather-hurricanes/hurricane-sandy-pictures-photos2-20121025
Hurricane Sandy is here. If you haven't heard about it, watch the local news tonight or search for it on the web. Here is a great link to check out for info on the storm:
Today in class we discussed sea-floor spreading. We didn't completely finish our notes, but here they are in case you'd like to look over them:

PLEASE consider donating a box of cornstarch or a box of sandwich-size ziplock-style bags to our class tomorrow. The more, the merrier. Thanks so much :)
